The Conrad Family

Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Family 446 (cropped)I'm Craig Conrad, and I'd like to welcome you to our e-home. As the picture shows, God has blessed Janet and me with five children (plus one grandchild in the picture, though we have four now), as well as another son, Michael, who awaits us in heaven.  Since moving here from upstate NY in 1978, we've lived happily in the little North Carolina town of Harrisburg, just to the northeast of Charlotte, and to the south of Concord.  It's actually outgrowing its "little" status, as a variety of new stores continue to open here, even Bojangles, my favorite fast food restaurant.

I met Janet when I was a junior in college.  I was majoring in Math and Computer Science, while Janet was the secretary of the Math department.  We married the week after I formally graduated in 1978, and have been happy together since!  She's easy to love and is my earthly encourager and strength...

It’s been a blessing that Janet wanted to stay home to raise the children (and pamper me!).  She finished Culinary School in 2003, and seems more like a 20-year-old with her energy – she still does cart-wheels!  She is a real Panthers fan, which is why the second family picture shows us all dressed in Panthers jerseys.

Our oldest son, Stephen (b.1981), graduated 2nd in his high school class, completed two years at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, took a year off and then entered the Air Force.  There, he finished a lengthy training in Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) stationed in Columbia, SC, spent time working with the Secret Service protecting President Bush during the 2004 elections, and was deployed to Iraq in May 2005 for several months of heat, sand, and blowing things up.  He returned home safely in September 2005, left the Air Force and continued to do state-side EOD (a.k.a. “UXO”) contract work.  He then returned to UNCC to complete his Engineering degree (with an exceptional GPA!), and is now employed at Zapata Engineering.

Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Family Panthers 153 (cropped, dusted)Lisa (b.1984), graduated third in her High School class, and then earned her degrees (major in Spanish, minors in Economics and Sociology) from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, including a summer studying in Guatemala.  Married to Will Pleasant with four girls (Breeze, twins Eva & Sofia, and Sahna), she expects to pursue her advanced degree at UNCC.  She has a great voice, and confidence to match -- various voice awards (2nd place state female high school vocals), sang National Anthem at various sporting events, including a very large crowd at a Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR race.  You can hear some of her music here.

Daniel (b.1988) graduated High School in 2007, and is now at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).  He spent some of his summers as a lifeguard.  Everywhere we go, people come up to us to tell us that Daniel taught their child’s swimming class and how great he was with them!  He loves basketball, working out, playing drums, being with his friends and working.  While in college, he works as a valet at Ritz-Carlton, does UXO contract work, and is plays drum in a band.

David (b.1990) graduated High School in 2009, and is a Junior at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, majoring in Political Science (hoping to go into law).  With his brother, he works as a valet and bellman at Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte.  He has been on mission trips to Guatemala (you can see his first report here).

Emily (b.1995) is in 11th grade at Covenant Classical School -- so sweet spirited, and a real blessing to our family.  She is a strong student and past recipient of the “Christian Character” award.  She enjoys performing in school productions and spending time with family and friends.  I like to think she still likes being "Daddy's Little Girl".

Michael was still born in 1997 -- we'll all be together again one day.

Beginning at the age of four, I’ve taken bi-annual trips individually with each of my children.  On occasion, I “double up” and take two at a time, but that is only for the bigger trips where finances are a greater factor.  Fortunately, my work-related travel has provided many frequent-traveler awards, giving us free air travel and hotel stays.  I’ve enjoyed these times traveling with them, and hope that the time spent makes up a bit for times that I wasn’t there for them.  I am grateful that Janet has been very supportive of these excursions, as well.  These trips include:

As my resume shows, I began work at IBM in 1977, a year before officially receiving my degree from Binghamton University (a.k.a. State University of New York at Binghamton) in 1978.  Many years later (2005), I completed my Masters of Science in  Project Management, from the School of Business at The George Washington University.  Although IBM has only moved me once, they have "allowed" me to travel a lot!  My work has taken me around the states and Canada, as well as Europe and the other side of the globe.  I have taken advantage of business trips and the frequent traveler awards they bring to extend my travel experiences to include:

  • United States (off-continent): Alaska; Hawaii;
  • North America: Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Quebec, Vancouver); Mexico (Cancun, Nogales);
  • Caribbean: Puerto Rico; St. Croix, USVI; Grand Cayman Island
  • Europe: Denmark (Copenhagen); England (London, Ilkley, Leeds, Bath, Windsor, Stonehenge, etc); France (Paris, Marseilles, Nice, etc); Germany (Berlin, Cassel, Frankfurt, etc); Italy (Milan, Venice, Rome); Monaco; Netherlands; Norway (Bergen, Oslo); Scotland (all over); Spain (Barcelona); Sweden (Stockholm); Switzerland; Vatican City; Wales;
  • Asia/Far East: Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Caines, Great Barrier Reef); China (Beijing, Shanghai); India (Bangalore, Pune); Japan (Tokyo); Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur); Singapore;
  • Middle East: Israel (Jerusalem, Nazareth, Tel Aviv, Dead Sea, Golan Heights, Jordan River, Sea of Galilee, etc);
  • Africa: South Africa (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Kruger Park)

Included in the above have been longer-term travel assignments (on site most weeks for an extended period) in Wichita, KS; Minneapolis, MN; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Columbus, OH; Colorado Springs, CO; Arlington, VA; India;

Motorcycles

Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: BurgmanIn the summer of 2006, Janet had a sudden interest in motorcycles and took a weekend class to get her own license.  I took advantage of this interest and bought one for myself.  Though I had grown up on trail bikes, and had my street license at age 17, I hadn’t had one since my college days.  Back then, that was all I had for transportation, so I was used to riding in all weather (including snow and ice!).  I’m much older now, and not as tough as I was.  However, I still ride in all weather, but I’ve pampered myself with clothing to accommodate it – heated jacket liners, etc.

Although Janet has not bought a bike of her own, she likes riding on the back of mine.  I’ve picked up a couple of riding friends as well, so this is a nice “retro” change for me.

My bike is a Suzuki Burgman 650 – a “maxi-scooter”.  It’s basically a motorcycle, but it has the distinguishing scooter features of step-through seating, automatic transmission, and smaller tires.  It also has lots of storage, a fairing and windshield that blocks the cold wind, with comfortable seat and backrests.  I’ve added accessories to the off-the-floor model:

1.      Russell “Day-Long” custom dual seat, heated, leather inserts, with driver backrest and pouch

2.      ClearView XL windshield, lightly tinted, with vent

3.      GIVI E52 top case with brake lighting

4.      Autocom communications system supporting:

a.       driver-to-rider

b.      bike-to-bike

c.       iPod MP3 Player

d.      Cell phone

5.      Garmin GPS (otherwise, I got lost easily!)

My wish list is long as well!
